7 ways to prepare for coronavirus lockdown

The intention of this article is to give you some practical self-preservation tips and personal development advice that you can implement at home during the coronavirus pandemic.

One good thing about “Social Distancing” and “Self Isolation”, apart from protecting you and others from the deadly virus, is that your mind can finally take a breather from being constantly pulled from one distraction to the other.

When your mind is calm and still, it has more space, energy and bandwidth to find effective solutions to problems and issues related to your personal life like work, health, relationships, etc.

So, make good use of use this time. Identify your weaknesses through introspection and create a plan to overcome them.

Right now, no one knows how long this COVID 19 outbreak is going to last. However, the dust will eventually settle and everything will go back to normal.

Till then, let’s invest our time and energy towards generating actions that lead to self sufficiency, financial discipline, skill development and better health. Follow the 7 steps provided below to prepare yourself for the Coronavirus lockdown:

1) BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM:

Widespread epidemics, looming recessions, and crashing stock markets can plague our minds with fear and uncertainty.

Stress caused by these external factors can really compromise our immune system and make us vulnerable to diseases.

So, in these dire times, we must make health our top priority. Given below are few ways by which you can boost your immune system:

  • Take Your Vitamins:
    I have been advised by my physician to eat one multivitamin tablet everyday after breakfast for 3 months, then take a break for 1 month and repeat the cycle again.

    Consuming these multivitamins will ensure that you get your daily dose of nutrition.

    Please keep in mind that you also need to eat good clean food atleast 5 to 6 days a week. Vitamins and supplements won’t replace the benefits of a balanced diet.

    Home cooked meals, fruits, vegetables and supplements should make your immune system robust enough to fight diseases and viruses.

    Consult with your doctor or physician and follow their advice to make your immune system top notch. Remember, prevention is always better than cure!
  • Exercise Frequently:
    Since, we are all sitting at home and not moving much this can make us lazy and unmotivated.

    Get up and move around, it’s good for your body. Do light stretches and exercises.

    This is my workout regiment (3 times a week):
    – Warm up stretches (shown in video below)
    – Push ups (5 sets of 10)
    – Squats (2 sets of 25)
    – Planks (2 minutes)
    – Skipping (2 minutes)

    Our bodies are built for motion and not meant to be stationary for long. So, work out regularly and stay healthy.

  • Sleep Well:
    Your body heals itself while you sleep. Make sure that you are getting atleast 7-8 hours of good sound sleep everyday, this is crucial for your overall health and well being.

    Lack of sleep can lower your immunity and make you susceptible to ailments, illnesses and diseases.

2) REDUCE MONTHLY EXPENSES:

Take some time out and write down all your monthly expenses.

Now, separate these expenses into two columns – viz., essential expenses and non-essential expenses.

Rent, grocery, utility bills, loan repayments, etc. becomes a part of essential expenses. Clothing, eating out, cable, etc. becomes a part of non-essential expenses.

Cut down all non-essential expenses that are not adding any value to your quality of life.

The objective of doing this exercise is to cultivate the habit of holding onto money and not spending it immediately. The “crackhead” mentality of blowing money as soon as it hits your bank account needs to go.

We don’t know what kind of impact this virus is going to have on our jobs and businesses, so let’s be proactive for once and save money for a rainy day.

3) MAKE MORE MONEY:

Reducing your monthly expenses does help a lot but, you also need to figure out a way to make more money.

That means working a second job, starting a side hustle, or building a small business in addition to your existing job.

See if you can find a way to make money online with your existing career, hobby or passion.

For some time become comfortable with the idea of working atleast 70-80 hours a week. Create a goal of making an extra $1000 to $3000 a month from your side hustle or business and work towards it diligently.

Develop new skills relevant to your career by taking online courses and separate yourself from your competition. You will climb the corporate ladder faster and make more money in the process.

Create your LinkedIn profile if you haven’t already and make it crisp and professional. Write informative articles and helpful posts that pertain to your industry or profession.

This way you can market your skill and expertise to people in your field and attract higher paying jobs if you’re an employee or new clients if you’re an entrepreneur.

4) CREATE AN EMERGENCY RESERVE:

Open a new bank account in your name. This will be your emergency reserve.

Now, put the additional money you made from your second job, side hustle or business (Refer Point No. 3) and the money you saved by cutting down your expenses (Refer Point No. 2) into this new account.

We will keep adding money to this account every month to hedge any unplanned future emergencies like hospitalization, sudden loss of job, etc.

The economy is in turmoil so you need to have atleast six months to a year’s worth of living expenses in this account.

If you have debts, then pay them off first.

If you’re planning to invest in stocks, real estate, etc. do so only after paying off your debts and having sufficient money in your emergency reserve.

5) SET NEW GOALS:

This is the perfect time to set new goals that are big, bold and ambitious.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • What do you really want from life?
  • What does your dream life look like?
  • What type of lifestyle will give you the most satisfaction and fulfillment?

Now, don’t be in a hurry to finish this exercise. Take your time to answer these questions.

Once you have a clear picture of what you want, the next step would be to work your way backwards and chalk out clear defined goals that will help you live your dream life.

Make sure that your goals are measurable and have a deadline – e.g., I want to lose 20 pounds in 2 months.

7) SAFETY MEASURES:

Keep your house and surroundings clean. Maintain personal hygiene and practice social distancing. Avoid public gatherings, functions and parties at all costs. Only go out when necessary.

If you happen to go out, wear a mask and make sure that you wash your hands properly when you come back home.

Stock atleast two week’s worth of supplies like food, water, medicines and other necessary items at home. Also, make sure you have adequate cash with you at all times.

This will help you if there is an outbreak of COVID 19 in your area and you have to stay at home for a prolonged length of time.

Store all emergency numbers of nearby clinics, doctors, hospitals, police stations, etc. on your mobile phone for easy access.

CONCLUSION:

We are going through a global reset and there may be tough times ahead for the entire world economy. Active vigilance is the need of the hour.

Please take this coronavirus pandemic very seriously, listen to your health care authorities and follow their suggestions diligently.
